CHIKWAWA (Thoko Chikomo, Mana) – Police in Chikwawa have arrested a 31-year-old woman for dumping her newly born baby into a pit latrine.

Speaking in an interview on Sunday, Chikwawa Police Spokesperson, Constable Foster Benjamin, confirmed the development, saying the suspect, Sellina Joseph was arrested on Thursday after she committed the offence.

‘‘The incident occurred at Migano Village under Traditional Authority Katunga in the district. It is alleged that the suspect threw the baby-boy into a toilet and then went to a garden,’’ said Benjamin.

He explained that the baby was crying while in the pit and was discovered by one of the neighbours who wanted to answer a call of nature.

The police spokesperson added that the person who discovered the incident alerted the neighbourhood before informing the police. He then, together with members of the community retrieved the baby from the toilet.

Benjamin revealed that the newly born child was taken to Chikwawa District Hospital where he is being treated.

“Medical report from the hospital indicates that the child is okay and healthy.

Joseph, who is still in police custody awaiting justice, comes from Migano Village under Traditional Authority Katunga in Chikwawa District.
