LILONGWE (Papius Liwonde, Malawi NewsNow) –Former Press Secretary to the late President Bingu wa Mutharika, Mr Chikumbutso Mtumodzi, has expressed shock that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) secretary general Ms Grazeldar Jeffrey could claim that former first lady Callista Mutharika killed Bingu.
Ms Jeffrey made the damning accusation Saturday during President Peter Mutharika’s whistle stop tour of Thyolo, Mulanje.
“Calista Mutharika is the one who killed President Bingu wa Mutharika,” Jeffrey said much to shock of everyone around.
But Mr Mtumodzi said Jeffrey’s pronouncement is embarrassing to the whole presidency.
“The whole world knows that there was a commission of inquiry and the findings never came close to what Jeffrey is saying…it’s very unfair to accuse the former first lady,” he said.
He accused the DPP secretary general of crossing the line with shameful and unfounded claims
Late Bingu, the elder brother to the incumbent President, died from a heart attack after he collapsed in his office at State House in Lilongwe in April, 2012.
The 78-year-old Bingu was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The then President Mrs Joyce Banda, appointed a Commission of Inquiry to inquire into all aspects surrounding the death of President Bingu wa Mutharika.
The commission chaired by Justice Elton Singini in its findings showed Wa Mutharika died of a heart attack on his way to hospital in Lilongwe on April 5, and not on April 7 in South Africa, as originally claimed by the government and Mutharika’s family.
The report also revealed that Peter Mutharika, who was then foreign minister, attempted to convince the army to take over and stop Banda from ascending to power.
