ZOMBA (Papius Liwonde) –University of Malawi officials say they would not be bulldozed into acting on issues because of threats.
Registrar of the University of Malawi Okomaatani Malunga was reacting to Chancellor College Academic Staff Union and Chancellor College Students Union who have threatened strike and protests should the council fail to reach an agreement with the staff union on pay rise.
“The council has powers but it never issues threats to students, it never issues threats to staff therefore the council cannot take threats,” he said.
Malunga said the council will meet the staff union members again on March 29 following its initial meeting on Sunday.
He said the Sunday meeting was scheduled to understand why the staff union was going ahead with a strike when they had not given room for discussions.
Staff union officials say the March 29 meeting is a make or break as its outcome will determine whether the strike will be on or not.
