SALIMA (Tamanda Mwale, Malawi NewsNow) –Police moved in swiftly to rescue a Malawi Congress Party councilor in Salima after party hooligans pounced on him, beating him mercilessly at a church on Sunday where Leader of Opposition Lazarus Chakwera was in attendance.
Salima police publicist Gift Chitowe confirmed that the police rescued Peter Kadammanja who was being beaten up by suspected Malawi Congress Party (MCP) rough necks.
“It happened at Nsalula CCAP where Honourable Chakwera was attending prayers. This happened towards the end of the prayers,” said Chitowe.
Party spokesperson Eisenhower Mkaka is yet to comment on the matter but sources in the party say Kadammanja was roughed up because he is an ally of the party rebel group led by Salima Central MP Felix Jumbe.
Kadammanja said he was beaten up for nothing and does not understand the whole thing.
Chitowe said police took Kadammanja to Salima Police Station where he refused to be recoprded a caution statement.
“He even refused to have a case open for his assailants, he said was feeling better and refused to get a letter to go to hospital,” Chitowe said.
This is a third incident when party hooligans have beat up those deemed to be political opponents of Chalkwera and the MCP.
MCP youths were notorious for beating up people during the one party state.
