NKHATABAY ( Malawi NewsNow) – A former powerful cabinet minister in Bingu wa Mutharika administration has dumped the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) two months after rejoining it, accusing the government of high level corruption.
Khumbo Chirwa, who is also former Nkhata Bay south east MP has since joined the opposition Malawi Congress Party.
Chirwa was welcomed into the DPP fold along with others at a high level political rally at Masintha ground in Lilongwe where President Peter Mutharika was in attendance.
“The DPP is full of crooks. They duped me that we were meeting the president in Lilongwe only to discover that we were to be welcomed back into the party,” he said.
He said he never asked to rejoin the party as its leadership is tainted with corruption scandals, theft of public money and abuse of public money.
Chirwa said the DPP would likely not win the 2019 general election because of, among others, failure by government to fix the economy.
However, DPP northern region governor Kenneth Sanga laughed off accusations that the party blindfolded Chirwa into rejoining the DPP.
“He should be honest, he should say the truth. The truth of the matter is that he found giant politicians who would want to stand as parliamentary candidates in the 2019 election. He fears competition, he knows he would not make it,” he said.
He described as baseless allegations of corruption, theft and abuse of public money as cited by Chirwa.
