NewsNOWLILONGWE (Malawi NewsNow)-Malawi Police on Thursday arrested Rwandan war genocide fugitive Vincent Murekezi and took him to Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court where he was told the resons of his arrest.

He was arrested after Rwandan government expressed concern over  Malawi authorities reluctance to extradite him to face justice on his involvement in 1994 in the killing of more than 20,000 Tutsis.

Lawyer Mr Gift Katundu representing Mr Murekezi  said  his client was told the reasons why police have arrested him.

He said Police told the court that Mr. Murekezi has been arrested in connection with his conviction on genocide charges in Rwanda.

“ Proceedings will resume next Tuesday where the State will be expected to start committal procedures as the case will have to be heard by the High Court,” said Katundu.

Murekezi, according to Kigali, was found guilty for crimes related to the 1994 genocide and subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment.

Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Security was planning to meet and discuss Murekezi’s case following a petition by civil society, the committee’s chairperson’s Ms Olipa Chiluwa confirmed.

Murkeezi is now remanded at Maula Prison in Lilongwe.
