LILONGWE (Malawi NewsNow)- A South African swimmer caused a stir at  Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe when he insisted on flying in his speedo.

Malawi social media news sites posted photos of the swimmer saying “a South African man who smoked Malawian Hemp at Cape Maclear wants to fy back to South Africa naked.”

In fact he was doing it on a dare, for charity!

Madswimmer – a charity involved with daring swimming challenges to raise funds for children – said: “While we take our swims rather seriously, and we definitely take the charities we support very seriously, sometimes our fundraising efforts have a lighter side!

“One of our Lake Malawi swimmers – Greig Bannatyne – raised an additional R30,000 for the cause by travelling home to SA in his Speedo! There were a few (official) issues along the way, but Greig, you’re our true hero!”

Along with his fellow Madswimmers, Greig had completed a 20km swim across Lake Malawi to raise funds for a kids’ charity in Malawi.

After the fake reports, one local wrote that the news site “should be ashamed, this man is raising money for charities in our struggling country by flying out in his costume.”

Other locals however said it constituted “public indecency “

Madswimmer.com said they’re aware of the report and that “this is completely unfounded and could not be further from truth! Our fabulous Greig took this on as a dare, to raise additional funds for this swim, for both local and Malawian charities. We stand by his actions.”
