MZUZU (Malawi NewsNow) –At least 55 passengers escaped death narrowly after an Axa Bus Company executive coach burst into flames in Viphya Plantation, widely known as Chikangawa Forest, Mzimba on Monday night.
According to one of the passengers, the incident happened after the bus passed through Viphya Plantation.
The driver, Reneck Kumbatira, stopped the bus to allow passengers to disembark and save their luggage.
“We saw smoke followed by flames and some were forced to jump out of the windows,” said one of the passengers who survived the incident.
According to Axa Bus Company and Mzuzu Police Station officers, the bus, registration NN 7313, was coming from Blantyre heading to Mzuzu.
Agma Holdings Limited chairperson Mark Katsonga Phiri confirmed the accident, saying the fire was caused by binding.
Katsonga said rpassengers had been transferred to other bus.
He thanked God that no life was lost and that passengers secured their luggages.
Northern Region Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya confirmed that no one was hurt but police are investigating the incident.
