A fuel tanker exploded as residents gathered around to buy fuel from the driver on Thursday, killing 73 people

TETE (Malawi NewsNow)-At least 73 people have been killed  as the  tanker had been carrying fuel to Malawi from the port city of Beira in Mozambique as people had been trying to siphon off petrol from the truck.

Officials says  the tanker exploded in the village of Caphiridzange in Tete province, near the border with Malawi.

More than 100 others were injured, some of them critically and  were taken to hospital about 90km away.

Mozambique’s information ministry director Joao Manasses said it was also possible that the vehicle had been ambushed by residents.
