LILONGWE (Muchanakhwaye Khwepeya, Malawi NewsNow) – Names of individuals including 7 ministers who allegedly siphoned money from government amounting in the so called K577billion cashgate scandal have been leaked.
The government on Monday said it would release names of the cabinet ministers on Tuesday. However, the day went by without any hint that the government would release the names prompting people to rumour mongering.
Names of suspects who allegedly stole from Malawians include seven cabinet ministers .
They are nformation minister Patricia Kaliati, Agriculture minister George Chaponda, Labour minister Henry Mussa, Finance minister Goodall Gondwe, Mines minister Bright Msaka and Local government Kondwani Nankhumwa.
The seven cabinet ministers were all powerful and close to former president Bingu wa Mutharika either in party politics or government.
Kaliati was an all powerful lady in Bingu’s Democratic Progressive Party where she was director of women.
Chaponda was in Bingu’s inner circle in both party and government affairs; Mussa called the shots in the party as treasurer general; Gondwe was one of the closest allies of Bingu.
Msaka was the blue eyed boy of Bingu and as secretary to the Office of the President and Cabinet, he was very close to the former head of state; Nankhumwa was part of Bingu’s inner circle and.
All these seven senior cabinet ministers have amassed untold wealth during the second term of Bingu.
