LILONGWE (Malawi NewsNow)- Ward councillors have finally received the much awaited K1 million loans for motorcycles, ending a two year battle as government was finding the best way on how to issue loans to public workers who do not receive a fixed salary.
The ceremony took place on Tuesday in Lilongwe where Local Government Association of Malawi chairman Mr Samson Chaziya hailed the government for heeding to the request.
“We have been looking forward to this day for a long time. We have waited for two years for this day,” he said.
He said the motorcycles will enable the ward councillors monitor development projects, saying the lack of it retarded development in some areas.
Local Government minister Kondwani Nankhumwa warned the ward councillors that the money was not a gift but a loan therefore they were supposed to take care of it as councils would be deducting their allowances to recover the money before May 19, 2019.
