LILONGWE (Maston Kaiya, Mana)- Police in Lilongwe have arrested five people suspected of stealing items from vehicles parked at entertainment joints in Lilongwe.
Lilongwe Police Station Public Relation Officer (PRO), Inspector Kingsley Dandaula said the people are suspected to have been terrorizing Gulliver bottle stores, City Center parking lots, Waka Waka Entertainment Center, Bwandiro bottle stores and various entertainment places in Lilongwe.
He said Lilongwe Police had been receiving complaints from motor vehicle owners who usually park at these entertainments places despite locking their vehicles and have been on the lookout for them.
“The suspects were using sharp car breaking instruments that are shaped similar to a normal car key which are able to penetrate and destroy the locking system and finally opens the door, this is a challenge and motorists should be alert,” said the PRO and disclosed that the suspects were using a Toyota Corolla motor vehicle registration number NU 3444 for their operations.
The Police have identified the suspects as Ulukando Mathews 25 from Mlunga village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Machinjiri in Blantyre, Chifundo Kalinde 26, from Matapila village, TA Mazengera in Lilongwe, Yamikani Mbewe 18, from Kandota village, TA Kwataine in Ntcheu, Collins Gama 18 from Kachimanga village, TA Kwataine in Ntcheu and Luis Banda 17, from Lumbadzi village, TA Chitukula in Lilongwe.
In recent months Police also arrested criminals who had been stealing from vehicles parked at funerals and cemeteries.
In May 2015, Police also arrested two criminals who had been terrorizing vehicles parked at Game, Shoprite, Cross Roads and Gate Way parking lots and recovered assorted stolen items worth thousands of kwachas.
