An official from the Foundation, Yvonne Tamanda said this on Sunday at Chancellor College in Zomba when her organisation donated 29 mattresses to the University of Malawi constituent college.
She said handouts promotes the culture of laziness which makes it impossible to get out of poverty trap.
“Malawians continue to live in abject poverty because of the culture of handouts. We need to teach Malawians means of how to make money instead of giving them handouts,” she said.
She said the country cannot develop economically and socially if the people continue to be trapped in poverty and laziness as long as the culture of handouts continue because the spirit of hard working will not be there.
Tamanda defended the decision of her organisation to make the handout of the blankets to the college saying the students need to have a very good sleeping place as they will be instrumental in the country’s development once they finish college.
Linda Saka, an official from the college thanked the Foundation for the blankets.
She said college students needed a very good place of sleeping and asked other organisations to help the college in various forms.
