Police publicist for the district, sergeant Ignatius Esau, said the victimised girl was coming from prayers when the suspect coaxed her into his house where he sexually abused the girl.
The boy was caught sexually abusing the girl and the grandmother of the victim reported the matter to police, according to police spokesman.
However, when police arrived at the scene, the suspect had already made a runner.
Police took the girl to Nkhatabay district hospital where medics confirmed that the girl was indeed defiled.
The suspect hails from Chigoli village, traditional authority Kabunduli in Nkhatabay district.
Defilement is contrary to section 138 of Malawi’s penal code and the maximum sentence for the offence is life imprisonment. Related cases are currently dominating headlines in the local media.
