The suspect—a bicycle repairer from Namasalima Trading Centre—was reported to have defiled the girl several times on her way from school and bought her silence with money.
Zomba Police spokesperson, Patricia Supiliano, said on October 6, some teachers at the school became suspicious of the girl as she showed some signs of pregnancy and they reported to her mother.
Her mother took the girl to Domasi Rural Hospital where a pregnancy test revealed that she was five months pregnant.
The girl fingered Mwazamba when questioned by her mother, who reported the matter to Domasi Police Unit and the suspect was arrested the same day.
He will appear in court soon to answer defilement charges contrary to Section 138 of the Penal Code.
Mwazamba hails from Ngalanga Village in the area of Traditional Authority Kuntumanji in Zomba.
