LILONGWE (Malawi NewsNow)- Musician Wendy Harawa has made revelations that female artists in Malawi are facing many hurdles including sexual abuse, blaming some radio DJs for rejecting their songs on air because they were denied sexual favours.

According to Harawa, the corporate world “look at female artists as sex objects.”

She reveal in an article which was published in The Nation.

“ Most of the time when I visit their offices they ask for sex or sexual relationships and they would not render any help if I don’t comply with their desires,” she says.

Musicians Union of Malawi (MUM) president the Reverend Chimwemwe Mhango says during a meeting the union held recently, a lot of female musicians opened up and explained how some sponsors ask for sexual favours.

MUM women’s desk chairperson Martha Mitukaregrets that female artists report when ‘deals go sour’, saying : “When they come out in the open, it’s either they have contracted diseases or they have not been helped as expected. It’s unfortunate that some of these women are gospel musicians or in steady marriages.”
