ZOMBA (Malawi NewsNow)-The Zomba Chief Resident Magistrate Agnes Nyirenda on Friday, September 18, 2015 sentenced a former cabinet minister Enock Maotcha Banda to six years in jail with hard labour for abducting a 17 year old girl.

The court heard that last year, (2014) Maotcha Banda, the former Minister of Trade and Industry abducted the girl whom he has been in a relationship with since 2013 from one of the secondary schools in Zomba.

Earlier, last year the girl was missed from her home which prompted the parents reporting the matter to police upon rumours that the girl was with the convict at his guest house at Ntanja in Machinga district.

Ntanja police station collaborated with the girl’s parents to follow the two lover birds which were found at Madzi ndi Moyo quest house which belongs to Banda that led to his arrest which followed court proceedings.

In her ruling, Magistrate Nyirenda said Maotcha deserved stiffer punishment as his action compromised a public figure’s image to the general audience as he was supposed to be exemplary and act as a parent.

His offense was contrary to section 78 subsections of the Child Protection Act that attracts 10 years of maximum sentence but Maotcha was slapped with six years in jail upon his plea for leniency sentence as he was the first offender.

Maotcha Banda has therefore sent to Zomba Maximum Prison to serve his six years jail term for abduction.
