LILONGWE (Malawi NewsNow) – Chief Secretary to Government, Mr George Mkondiwa, who is head of the civil service has been given new attractive condition of service which are equal to the benefits of the State Vice President.
Mkondiwa will be having same security, housing benefits live vice president and similar emoluments, government officials told Malawi Newsnow.
Government also intends to give pay hikes to some Principal Secretaries despite country’s turbulent economic times.
Malawi’s Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development Goodall Gondwe does not hide that the country has “an abnormal economy “.
Government will also start implementing hefty salary increases for President Prof Peter Mutharika and his 20 member cabinet ministers and 193 Members of Parliament by between 167% and 368% respectively.
Mutharika will be earning about $5 400 per month from $3 000. His Vice Dr Saulos Chilima would now be pocketing $3 600 from $2 000. Malawi cabinet ministers would be carting home $3 200 per month from $1 200 while their deputies would be getting $1 600 from $856.
Malawi’s economy is sailing through stiff head winds with its currency, the Kwacha, registering steep declines against major currencies.
The government is heavily borrowed and foreign aid that it relies on for funding is uncertain.
Malawi’s donors, who contribute about 40% of its annual budget, closed their taps in the wake of the Cashgate scandal, a systemic plunder of government monies that saw the disappearance of more than $48-million during former President Joyce Banda’s two-year rule and $214-million that vanished during the eight-year reign of former president Bingu wa Mutharika.
