MZUZU (Malawi NewsNow) –Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM), is planning to procure diesel generators to be planted in three regions of South, Central and North to help during blackouts experienced by the nation, reports said on Wednesday.
The Company’s Marketing and Business Development Manager, Mr Wiseman Kabwazi said Wednesday in the northern city of Mzuzu that the generators will be used to supplement power during peak hours when the demand is high.
“Plans are at an advanced stage to purchase the generators so that by the end of this year or early next year the country should have them in place,” he said.
He added that the generators will give an additional 10 megawatts respectively in both southern and central region while the north will have 6 megawatts.
The generators will not attract further tariffs from consumers, he said.
Malawi is currently experiencing blackouts and load shedding what ESCOM said is due to low water levels to generate electricity.
