K3 million increase in Standard Bank Cup

BLANTYRE (Malawi NewsNow ) —We are back with K43 million sponsorship, announced Standard Bank of Malawi marketing manager Mr Brian Mungomo Jnr at the launch of 2015 edition of the Standard Bank Knockout Cup on Friday in Blantyre

“We realised how close Malawians are to soccer and we want them to enjoy this edition, which will be a precursor to the 10th anniversary edition in 2016,” added Mungomo.

Previously the competition was at the tune of K40 million but with the announcement, the Standard Bank Knockout Cup which will roll into action on September 12 will have a K3 million increase in the package to cater for administration, equipment and prizes.

Mungomo had a plea to the football fraternity to avoid violence and hooliganism at all cost.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Mr Walter Nyamilandu thanked the bank for their support, expressing the hope that “the game of football will continue being exciting.”

Nyamilandu also talked tough against violence, saying the sponsors “will not tolerate any hooliganism and violence.”

Top six teams in last year’s TNM Super League, namely Big Bullets, Moyale Barracks, Blue Eagles, Red Lions, Silver  Striker ( defending champions) and Civo United have automatically made it into the knockout stage, according to FAM competitions officer Mr Gomezgani Zakazaka.

But the other nine teams in the current league season, Mighty Be Forward Wanderers, Mafco FC, Epac FC, Kamuzu Barracks, Dedza Young Soccer, Azam Tigers, Airborne Rangers, Mzuni FC and Fisd Wizards will be at the mercy of Standard Bank customers, who transact business with the financial institution.

The voting has opened up to September 1.
