SYDNEY (Malawi NewsNow) –A combative Malawi netball team on Wednesday pushed New Zealand hard before they conceded in the final quarter for a 57-49 loss at the Netball World Cup in Sydney.

Malawi’s effort was built around unceasing defensive pressure, led by goal defence Caroline Mtukule and keeper Towera Vinkhumbo, and replicated right through the court.

The Silver Ferns twice established six-goal leads in the first quarter, then eight in the third quarter. At other times, however, Malawi Queens, spurred on by the crowd,  cut the deficit to just two goals.

It made for another tense affair which, in the end, New Zealand won.

The Malawi goal shoot Mwai Kumwenda impressed with a 38 from 42 return.

Malawi outfit will play next Jamaica to seek qualification into the semi-finals.
