Chaziya -No longer council chairperson

LILONGWE (Mana ) — Councillor Samson Chaziya of Mazengera Ward, who was chairperson for Lilongwe District Council and his vice-chairperson Halima Issati of Chiwenga Ward, have lost their positions after failing to secure enough votes after expiry of their first term.

Chaziya, a member of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) got 14 votes and lost his seat to Peter Chikuse (MCP) of Mteza Ward who got 24 votes. John Kawinga (MCP) from Sanjiko Ward got seven votes.

Issati (MCP) got eight votes for the vice-chairperson position, but lost to Luciano Botoman (MCP) of Bunda Ward who got 18 votes. Patricia Nkhono (MCP) of Nalikuti Ward who also contested for the post of vice-chairperson got 17 votes.

Prior to the polls, Chaziya, who is president for Malawi Local Government Association (Malga), asked the council to retain him as chairperson to ensure that he continues fighting for better working conditions for councillors.

Said Chaziya: “You are all aware that I have been fighting for improved conditions of service for councillors in my capacity as president for Malga. If you do not maintain me as chairperson for the council, I will lose my post at Malga and that will affect the good fight I have been putting in for all of us.”

In   his acceptance speech, Chikuse, a librarian by profession, said he will use a participatory management approach during his tenure.
