BLANTYRE (Malawi NewsNow ) — Public tax collector Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) is not yet ready with the case of property valuer Mr Yeremia Chihana of tax evasion, saying they need more tme, the High Court in Blantyre was told on Tuesday.
MRA lawyer Mr Chiwala Chipeta sought an adjournment from t High Court judge John Chirwa , saying they needed more time before they could proceed.
The judge adjourned the hearing of case to a date yet to be communicated.
Chihana’s lawyer, Lusungu Gondwe, did not object to MRA’s plea.
In June this year, MRA in partnership with Malawi Police Service (MPS) arrested Chihana for alleged tax evasion of K1.3 billion, three months after MRA impounded Chihana’s computers and files at his YMW Property Investments Company offices in Lilongwe.
Chirwa ordered Chihana’s release after Gondwe complained about alleged political interference in his client’s arrest.
Chihana, a politician in New Rainbow Coalition, came in the limelight when he valued the estate of former president the late Bingu wa Mutharika to be worth K61 billion. However, Mutharika’s family disputed the assessment as not true.
