BLANTYRE (Malawi NewsNow) — it’s bad news for Malawi Queens, who drop from the number one netball team on the African continent as they have been toppled by South Africa’s Proteas.
According to the latest International Netball Federation (INF) world rankings, the Queens have dropped one place to sixth in the world. On the continent, the Queens are second to their bitter rivals, the Proteas.
The Queens are officially the most successful sporting team the nation has ever produced.
They are currently in Sydney, Australia for the World Netball Cup (WNC).
Coach Peace Chawinga-Kalua downplayed the ranking, saying WNC will determine their strength.
“It been long time we have been on fifth position, we needed to move upwards by the way and the world cup provides us the opportunity to improve,” she said.
New Zealand-based shooter Mwawi Kumwenda also agrees with her coach, saying it is “attainable if we can play our lungs out starting with South Africa on Friday.”
The top four-ranked teams are Australia, New Zealand, England and Jamaica.
