BLANTYRE (Malawi NewsNow)-Malawi Queens star shooter Mwawi Kumwenda will not be part of the squad going to the World Cup from this August 6 to 17 because Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) has refused to withdraw its warning letter.
Mwawi, through her cousin Hlupekire Phiri, who doubles as her manager and legal adviser, demanded the withdrawal of the warning letter by the netball governing body as the condition for the player’s return,.
However, NAM president Rosy Chinunda said the demand cannot be adhered.
“We cannot [withdraw the warning letter]. If she does not want to join the team then that is it,” Chinunda declared.
Mwawi has said through her manager that she will not join Malawi Queens if NAM is not prepared to withdraw the warning letter.
The New Zealand based star player has not featured for the Queens since last year when she decided to fight for the rights of other ‘abused’ players in the Africa’s number one and world’s fifth ranked team.
But Malawi Queens coach Peace Chawinga-Kalua has urged NAM to resolve the dispute, saying Mwawi is an “important” player for the squad and that her presence in the team is “greatly needed.”
