LILONGWE (Malawi NewsNow ) — More than 100 kilograms of elephant ivory worth $200,000 have been found at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA), in Malawi’s capital Lilongwe in three heavy bags which were partly wrapped in clothes ready to be flown to Indonesia through Ethiopian Airlines., Police said on Thursday.
Malawi Police said the ivory was destined for Jakarta, Indonesia.
“The bags of ivory were detected using the passengers X-ray machine. Immediately after discovering the incident, the owner disappeared and did not board the plane,” Police Publicist at Sapulain Chitonde said.
Currently, the police are hunting for that unidentified person on suspicion of attempting to export the illegal goods.
Malawi recently launched a crackdown on the ivory trade amid mounting international pressure.
